New Biometric Requirements Take Effect Across Europe

European vacation destinations have begun requiring all travelers to have fingerprints taken and photos captured upon arrival as part of a new comprehensive screening process that took effect October 12.

France, Italy, Portugal, the United Kingdom and 25 other countries started implementing the new Entry/Exit System (EES), marking a significant shift in how American travelers will be processed when visiting Europe.

Biometric Data Collection Now Mandatory

The EES system requires travelers to provide prints of their fingers along with photographs as part of the entry process. This biometric data collection applies to all visitors arriving at participating European destinations.

The system affects travelers headed to some of the most popular European vacation spots for Americans, including major tourist destinations in France and Italy, as well as Portugal and the United Kingdom.

28 Countries Participating in New System

A total of 29 countries are participating in the new Entry/Exit System, with the implementation beginning in mid-October. The coordinated rollout across multiple European nations represents a unified approach to border security and traveler tracking.

The biometric requirements apply universally to travelers regardless of their country of origin, meaning American tourists will need to comply with the fingerprinting and photo procedures when arriving at any of the participating European destinations.

This marks a departure from previous entry procedures and adds an additional step to the arrival process for Americans traveling to Europe for vacation or business purposes.
