Netflix's live-action reimagining of Avatar: The Last Airbender has completed filming for both Season 2 and Season 3, with the second season further along in post-production, according to entertainment reporter Dessi Gomez.
The streaming service's adaptation of the acclaimed Nickelodeon animated series, which originally aired from 2005 to 2008, launched its first live-action season earlier this year. The original animated series followed Aang, a young Avatar who must master the four elements to stop the Fire Nation's war against the other nations.
Production Status
Both remaining seasons are currently "in the can," indicating that principal photography has wrapped for the series' final installments. However, Season 2 is reported to be closer to completion than Season 3, suggesting it is further advanced in the post-production process.
The live-action adaptation has faced the challenge of translating the animated series' fantastical elements and beloved characters to a live-action format. The original creators of the animated series, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, initially served as executive producers but departed the project in 2020, citing creative differences.
Netflix's Avatar Strategy
Netflix has invested significantly in expanding the Avatar universe, also developing animated projects set in the same world. The platform previously acquired the rights to the original animated series, which became one of its most-watched shows when it was added to the streaming service.
The live-action series represents Netflix's attempt to capture both nostalgic fans of the original animated series and new audiences unfamiliar with the Avatar world. The show features martial arts choreography and visual effects to recreate the "bending" abilities central to the series' mythology.
With production completed on the final seasons, Netflix will likely announce official release dates as post-production work continues on both installments.
