Major Safety Hazard Prompts Massive Weber Grill Brush Recall
Weber-Stephen Products LLC has issued an urgent recall of approximately 3.2 million metal wire bristle grill brushes following multiple reports of serious injuries caused by ingested wire bristles. The Palatine, Illinois-based company announced the recall after consumers required emergency surgery to remove swallowed wire fragments that detached from the brushes during normal use.
The recalled brushes, which have been sold at major retailers including Home Depot, Lowe's, Amazon, and specialty grilling stores since 2012, can shed small metal bristles that stick to grill grates undetected. These nearly invisible wires then transfer to food and can be unknowingly consumed, leading to potentially life-threatening internal injuries.
Emergency Room Cases Spark Investigation
"We've received at least 15 reports of wire bristles being ingested, with several cases requiring immediate surgical intervention," said Dr. Michael Patterson, an emergency medicine physician at Chicago's Northwestern Memorial Hospital. "These wire fragments can puncture the digestive tract, causing severe internal bleeding and infections that demand emergency surgery."
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has documented cases where patients experienced severe throat pain, difficulty swallowing, and abdominal injuries after consuming food contaminated with detached bristles. In the most serious incidents, patients required complex surgical procedures to locate and remove wire fragments embedded in their esophagus, stomach, or intestinal walls.
Which Weber Brushes Are Affected
The recall encompasses multiple Weber grill brush models sold between January 2012 and present, including:
• Weber Original Kettle Premium Grill Brush (Model 6494)
• Weber Genesis Grill Brush (Model 6471)
• Weber Spirit Grill Brush (Model 6463)
• Weber Premium Grill Brush Set (Model 6495)
The brushes feature stainless steel wire bristles attached to plastic or wooden handles with the Weber logo prominently displayed. They were manufactured in China and distributed throughout the United States and Canada, retailing for $12 to $35 each.
Company Response and Consumer Actions
Weber CEO Chris Scherzinger acknowledged the severity of the safety issue in a statement released Tuesday. "The safety of our customers is our absolute priority. We are working directly with the CPSC to ensure every affected brush is removed from homes immediately," Scherzinger said.

Consumers currently using Weber wire brushes should immediately discontinue use and inspect their grills carefully for any loose bristles before cooking. Weber recommends thoroughly wiping grill grates with a damp cloth before each use as an additional safety precaution.
