Las Vegas Group Makes Formal Offer for MLS Vancouver Whitecaps

Grant Gustavson, the son of billionaire Tamara Gustavson, is leading an investor group that has submitted a formal offer to acquire the Vancouver Whitecaps and relocate the Major League Soccer team to Las Vegas, according to a spokesperson for the group who confirmed the bid to ESPN.

The potential acquisition would represent a significant shift for the Whitecaps, who have been based in Vancouver, British Columbia since joining MLS in 2011. The team currently plays at BC Place, a 54,500-seat stadium in downtown Vancouver.

The Gustavson Connection

Grant Gustavson's involvement brings significant financial backing to the proposal through his connection to his mother, Tamara Gustavson, who holds billionaire status. The Gustavson family's wealth would potentially provide the substantial resources needed for both acquiring an MLS franchise and facilitating a major relocation.

Las Vegas MLS Ambitions

Las Vegas has been pursuing Major League Soccer expansion for several years. The city already hosts professional teams across other major sports leagues, including the NFL's Las Vegas Raiders, the NHL's Vegas Golden Knights, and the WNBA's Las Vegas Aces. Adding an MLS team would complete the city's collection of major professional sports franchises.

The potential relocation would need approval from MLS leadership and the league's Board of Governors. MLS has historically been cautious about franchise relocations, though the league has allowed moves in the past, including the relocation of the San Jose Earthquakes to Houston in 2006, where they became the Houston Dynamo.

For Vancouver, losing the Whitecaps would end the city's presence in Major League Soccer after more than a decade in the league. The team has been a fixture in Canadian soccer and MLS's Canadian division alongside Toronto FC and CF MontrΓ©al.

The formal nature of the offer indicates the Las Vegas group has moved beyond preliminary discussions into serious negotiations for the franchise acquisition and relocation.
