MANILA, Philippines — Jollibee Foods Corp. (JFC) announced Friday its acquisition of South Korea's premier hot pot chain operator in an $87 million deal that signals the Filipino fast-food giant's aggressive push into new dining categories and international markets.

The acquisition was executed through Jolli-K Co., JFC's 70-percent owned subsidiary that focuses on the company's Korean market operations. The deal gives Jollibee immediate access to Korea's thriving hot pot sector, which has seen explosive growth both domestically and internationally over the past five years.

Strategic Entry Into Fastest-Growing Dining Segment

"This acquisition represents a significant milestone in our expansion strategy," said JFC Chairman Tony Tan Caktiong in a statement. "Hot pot dining has emerged as one of the fastest-growing segments globally, and entering through Korea's market leader positions us perfectly for regional expansion."

The Korean hot pot market has experienced remarkable growth, with industry analysts projecting a compound annual growth rate of 15.3% through 2028. The communal dining experience has gained particular traction among younger demographics, making it an attractive complement to Jollibee's traditional quick-service restaurant model.

Details of the $87 Million Deal

Under the agreement, Jollibee will acquire 100% ownership of the Korean hot pot chain, which operates 127 locations across South Korea and has been expanding into neighboring markets including Japan and Taiwan. The chain reported revenues of approximately $156 million in 2023, representing a 23% increase from the previous year.

This acquisition continues Jollibee's ambitious international growth trajectory. The company currently operates over 1,600 stores across 18 countries, with international sales accounting for approximately 32% of total revenues in 2023.

Recent expansion efforts have focused heavily on Asian markets, where Jollibee has found success adapting its Filipino-style offerings to local tastes. The company's Korean operations, launched in 2019, have grown to 28 locations and serve as a crucial testing ground for menu innovations.

Market Impact and Future Plans

Industry experts view the acquisition as a strategic masterstroke that diversifies Jollibee's portfolio beyond its core fried chicken offerings.
